German Armored Parade in Oslo

Image size: 8308 x 6236 pixel. 17 MB
Date: Tuesday, 1 October 1940
Place: Oslo, Norway

The German military parade of the Panzertruppen (Tank Troops) unit which were held at Karl Johans Gate, Oslo, the capital of Norway, on October 1, 1940. These Panzerkampfwagen I Ausf.B type tanks were from the Panzer-Abteilung z.b.V. 40 led by Oberstleutnant Ernst Volckheim (1898-1962), seen here giving a military salute accompanied by one of his officer. Volckheim is dressed in a black Panzer uniform. The Universitetsplassen square is surrounded by buildings of the University of Oslo.. Ernst Volckheim himself went down in history as one of the founders of the German panzer force, apart from the more famous Heinz Guderian. From 1924 he had written on the theory of tank warfare, drawing on his experiences in the First World War as a member of the Imperial German Tank Corps. Ironically, the one who then received wider publication was Guderian, who had just written his masterpiece, "Achtung Panzer!", only in 1937! This is because it was the latter who introduced the armored unit to German leader Adolf Hitler, who was then so impressed by Guderian's presentation that he immediately said enthusiastically, "This is what I need! This is what I want to have!"

The Norwegian "Aftenposten" newaspaper described the parade on page 2 in its evening issue on Tuesday 1 October 1940, as follows: "German armored vehicles parade on Karl Johan. Just before half past ten this morning, a large German military music corps marched down Karl Johan and lined up just opposite the University on the occasion of German armored vehicles parade for its commander, Colonel Volksheim. It was not long after the band had lined up, before people gathered along the curb to watch the parade. And on the University Stairs, a number of students had gathered, who had a short break between lectures. Before the parade itself, the units that were to participate were gathered on Tullinløkken and marched from there to their tanks, which were meanwhile parked in the side streets. Shortly after, the long wagon column came up in Karl Johan and passed over Drammensveien. When Colonel Volksheim had taken his place, the first tank passed the colonel a moment later, while the music played a military march. Armored car after armored car rolled past on its belts. Different types of passers-by, followed by open cars, which brought everything an armored battalion needs to be effective. When the last carriage in the column had passed, Colonel Volksheim drove away, the music was silent and the parade was over. A few minutes later, the traffic went back to normal on Karl Johan."

This interesting, original color photo by Carl Gustav Rosenqvist was taken on August 10, 1942 and shows German and Finnish high-ranking officers crossing the Ladoga lake in Finland using Siebelfähre (Siebel's Freight / Ferry Boat) owned by Einsatzstab Fähre Ost (EFO), a Luftwaffe unit in Finland. This ferry operates around the Lake Ladoga region along with Italian MTB (12. Squadriglia MAS) and German mine ships from C-Gruppe / 31.Minensuch-Flottilla. From left to right: Oberstleutnant der Reserve Friedrich-Wilhelm Siebel (Kommandeur Einsatzstab Fähre Ost); Finnish Colonel Eino Iisakki Järvinen (Commander of the Lake Ladoga Beach Brigade), and two unknown Luftwaffe officers (the one on the far right is from the Flak unit based from his waffenfarbe). Original description from SA-Kuva - Finland: "During an inspection of the German Navy (Einsatzstab Fähre Ost) in Lahti, the invited guests set out on an infantry boat from where Colonel Keller received the parade. Bay bottom, Ladoga." Please note that if it's referred to Generaloberst Alfred Keller, so the ID is wrong because it is NOT him.

Junkers Ju 52 After Landing on the Hartvigvann-Lake

Image size: 1600 x 1115 pixel. 399 KB
Date: Saturday, 13 April 1940
Place: Hartvigvann-lake, Narvik, Norway
Photographer: Unknown

Junkers Ju 52 g4e “DB+RB” of 3./KGr.z.b.V. 102 after landing on the Hartvigvann-lake north of Narvik, Norway. This aircraft landed there on 13 April 1940 with 10 other Ju 52 to bring in supplies during the fighting around Narvik. Because of lack of fuel and the deep snow only one Ju 52 was able to take-off from the frozen lake! The other aircraft sank when the ice melted. Between 1983 and 1986 four of these aircraft were recovered and later restored. This aircraft carried an Ace of Hearts emblem. Pilot was Feldwebel Kathmann and the flight engineer Feldwebel Härtelt. The name of the radio-operator is still unknown.

Messerschmitt Bf 109 of JG 5 at Norway

Image size: 1600 x 960 pixel. 443 KB
Date: May 1945
Place: Lister/Lista Airfield, Farsund, Norway
Photographer: Unknown

Pictures of aircraft of IV.Gruppe / Jagdgeschwader 5 (JG 5) are rare. This one shows Messerschmitt Bf 109 G-14 “gelb 4” of 15.Staffel / JG 5 on Lister airfield (Norway) shortly before the capitulation early May 1945. Note the unusual shape of the tactical number and the black/yellow fuselage band of JG 5. The aircraft was marked with a wavy line behind the Balkenkreuz, but this is not the normal gentle wavy line for IV. Gruppen, but the more curved wavy line used by III. Gruppen until the end of 1943. This also can be seen within IV./JG 26, where the same strong wavy line was used. This aircraft has an Erla-hood and a Flettner-rudder. Note the red/white ribbons attached to the clamps between the elevators and rudder. The ribbons were used to make sure that removal of the clamps was not forgotten.
